What You Need to Know Before Your First Bikini Wax (It’s not that bad!)

I am super recent to the bikini wax game. Like, I just got my first wax about 2 months ago, but I’m wondering why I haven’t done it sooner. Being a FL girl I’m always in shorts, bikinis and all the small clothing. I’ve also been not-so-blessed with super dark hair. TMI? Plus, you never know when an impromptu beach trip will pop up.

Anyway, the idea of this blog post came when I started thinking about getting one myself. The only real resource I found to trust was asking other people who had previously had a bikini wax . There is seriously nothing on the internet that I felt answered all the questions I had while preparing me for what would happen.

Things to consider first:

Are you about to get your period? Your skin is wayy more sensitive about a week before and after your period. So, try to avoid that time frame OR know it’s gonna suck.

How soon after your first wax are you going to be flaunting it? In my experience, and many others I’ve talked to, have gotten major red bumps about 3 days after their first wax. Not like ingrown hair bumps, more like your follicles are irritated and inflamed.

Is your hair even long enough? I had this issue the first time. TMI? Sorry. You want to make sure the hair is at least 1/4 inch long so the wax can grab it and do its job. Most of the techs use hard wax which goes on “wet” and hardens within seconds, but doesn’t need cloth strip you’d usually see while getting your eyebrows waxed. This type of wax allows for better “grabbing” of the hair.

Don’t worry about panties! Yes, the tech is gonna be all up in there, so I thought I had to wear panties that I wouldn’t mind someone else seeing. Turns out, they give you a little pair of throw away undies.

Before

24 hrs before your wax: Exfoliate! This stimulate growth while also getting rid of the dead skin to allow for a closer wax.

1 hr before wax: Shower and exfoliate!

30 mins before wax: This is optional, but I always pop 3 Ibuprofen. They’re anti-inflammatory and pain reducers… I”m a baby.

During

Your lady will most likely give you a throw away pair of panties and a robe. Get undressed, put these on and let it begin.

Like I said above, they mostly use hard wax – which will go on and harden and she will pull just the wax off.

Prepare for the full process to take about 45 minutes. And if there are any left over hairs.. they will get pulled out with tweezers. I really didn’t think any of it hurt – I thought my eyebrows hurt worse than my first bikini wax..

After

Stay away from sweating and tight clothing. Both can cause irritation and in grown hairs.

Exfoliate like crazy – this will further prevent ingrown hairs & allow the hair to go back properly.

My fave exfoliator right now: Dove Body Polishย

That’s it! I really don’t do much more than that. & I promise, it’s really not as bad or painful as you might think.
