I’m the kind of girl who used to think there were sharks in my swimming pool and had anxiety while snorkeling and somehow, I got it together and went diving.
There was only one mild heart attack, when the instructor brought me to the bottom and I saw the largest lobster, I was so afraid of not being able to get away. But, I survived to tell the tale.
Casey is certified and was all for going, that could be what made me do it. She took me to Sea Saba, a local shop and dive center where the party started. I knew I wasn’t going to have enough time to get certified, but I was able to do their Discover Scuba Diving course and it was perfect. If you decide to visit, I highly recommend giving this a try.
The Discover Scuba course made me feel comfortable about diving. Lynn gave me an hour lesson in the morning, at the Queen’s Garden Resort pool, before we went out for a dive at 1. The lesson went over a few things, from getting familiar with the equipment to basic skills. I loved this concept, making me feel like I knew what to expect. It also helped that the views at Queen’s Garden Resort are amazing – looking over The Bottom and straight into the ocean (BREATHTAKING). Not a bad place to learn to dive, if I do say so myself.
When it was time to dive, Sea Saba sent me down with an instructor who made sure I was comfortable the entire dive. Aside from the fact that Casey’s husband told me there was a barracuda under the boat, seconds before I jumped in, it was smooth sailing.
My two biggest fears were, seeing a shark and not being able to equalize. Luckily, I didn’t see any sharks and the instructor brought me down very slow making sure I felt comfortable. We swam to the back of the boat where I was able to hold onto a rope and slowly sink down. Any time I felt pressure, I pointed to my ears and he would take me back up a few feet. Once I felt comfortable we would go back down.
Once we got deep enough to let go of the rope, it was a completely relaxing feeling. To just float with the fish and watch the ecosystem, it is an amazing experience.
Have you ever gone diving?

I have to say, I so enjoyed reading all about Saba!! I’m leaving Friday for Saba, and bringing my dear friend and mom too! My friend sounds like your timid character as you learned all about Scuba diving. She has now taken comfort in your stories. Thank you !!
June 1, 2017 at 12:02 amIronically enough, I was born on St. Maarten, and lived on Saba for 10 years. My parents created Sea Saba back in 1985.
Small world..er, island isn’t it?
